Living Building Gift is a worm composting bin in the form of a Shaker communal dwelling. The Shaker’s are an important example of sustained American communism. Living Building Gift combines principles of permaculture and communitarian spatial design as a starting point to consider how ideology manifests in the built environment and how the built environment can challenge dominant paradigms. When cared for, the worms transform waste into a rich organic soil amendment that is beneficial to a diversity of plants and microorganisms.
